Tau Māfanafana – #mixtape

In #mixtape, Features, HOME, MUSIC by Nolwenn Davies

#mixtape is a feature in which we ask someone to send in a playlist of ten tracks they’re enjoying at the moment and then get them to say a few things about each track. The idea being to see what we can gauge from someone’s music taste whilst listening to some cool tunes. We could go on about it a bit more but that’s about it really.

I’m proud to say I am a student who has survived exam season, albeit sleep-deprived and slightly insane. Finally free of responsibilities and all inhibitions shed – summer has arrived. Huzzah. I can finally kick back, relax and proceed to subject my friends to a never-ending stream of summertime selfies in questionable states of undress and inebriation. Thank you snapchat stories. Apologies to aforementioned friends.

When it comes to music – I find an easy-listening playlist an absolute necessity when moving and shaking from city to city during the warmer, more carefree months. Whether Europtripping, soaking up the sun in South East Asia or just enjoying being back home (and mum doing the cooking again), there’s always something playing in the background that I will forever associate my memories 0f summer with.

This playlist, you must forgive me, is a bit all over the place, just like my body clock at this time of the year. But until the fruity cocktails and sunstroke start to wear off, enjoy your holidays with ten tracks that have made up the soundtrack to my summers.

1. Electric Feel (Gespleu Downcast Edit) – Henry Green

Probably one of my favorite, more summery tunes on this list, I remember having this one on repeat nonstop when I was enjoying boogie boarding, fush and chups and family down in New Zealand. Will always remind me of the time my five-year-old cousin streaked in the house shouting “nudey-run”, we taught him well.

2. I Wish – Skee-Lo

Beer Pong. I also know all the words. And also wish I was a little bit taller…

3. Dream of Californication – Mashup-Germany

This one’s a more recent find, but I couldn’t not feature the Chili Peppers at some point on this list.

4. When You Were Young – The Killers

Summer fling.

5. It Wasn’t Me – Shaggy

#throwback.

6. Walking on a Dream – Empire of the Sun

B takes on the big apple.

7. I’m Yours – Jason Mraz

This was the soundtrack to the summer I graduated from high school. It was one of the happiest times of my life, but also a weird transitional period where I would feel nostalgic for everything I was experiencing then. Definitely a dedication to all my Singaporean homies.

8. Ignition (1901 Remix)(R.Kelly x Phoenix) – The Hood Remix

Sippin’ on coke and rum.

9. Call It What You Want – Foster the People

Can never resist dancing along to this one. Do it.

10. Waves (Robin Schultz Radio Edit) – Mr Probz

All I’ve been listening to poolside this summer.
