NYFW, AW 2014, Womenswear – 2014

In #bestinshow, ART & FASHION, Features, HOME by Charlotte Dawnay

#bestinshow is a feature in which Prancing Through LIFE contributors collate their five favourite collections from New York, London, Paris and Milan each season. This week, PTL’s Editor, Sam Prance, singles out his favourite looks from New York Fashion Week.

1. Cushnie et Ochs

Cushnie et OchsNew York fashion week has a reputation for being chic but dull. This season, however, was far from dull, just chic – and leading the chic brigade was none other than Cushnie et Ochs. The design duo formed shortly after graduating Parsons together in 2007 and now just six years old, have perfected the art of sexy-chic. From an exposed navel to a split in a maxi dress – these girls know where sex appeal lies. Expect a lot of it come AW.

2. J. Mendel

JWhen it comes to fashion, accessorising a skill which some people seem to possess and some people do not. Luckily for us, J. Mendel is a master of it and he demonstrates this ever so effortlessly in his new collection. Leather pencil skirts and turtlenecks are paired with fur-trimmed jackets and yellow belts, whilst floor-length dresses are left to work their magic on their own. It’s a lesson to us all and a very beautiful one too.

3. Marc Jacobs

Marc JacobsHaving been something of an under-achiever these past few years, what with helming Louis Vuitton and all, as well as his own two eponymous lines, it’s something of a relief that Marc Jacobs left his post at Vuitton. Not in terms of his design – LV mourns their loss – but for his own label’s sake. This ghost like addition to NYFW’s rostra is one of Jacobs best and it would seem that this sudden decline in workload is partly responsible for it.

4. Rodarte

RodarteIt’s seems as though the Rodarte sisters top themselves on a seasonal basis. Last season saw them find the animal within the New York girl and this collection appears to find the eccentric city socialite within its wearer. Glitter aplenty and snooty looks to boot – these clothes could nestle quite neatly into the wardrobes of the upper-east side’s braver elite. Here’s hoping it does. If not, it’s about time we had a new – ‘Clueless’ – is it not?

5. Vera Wang

Vera WangWhen someone mentions he name Vera Wang the first thing which springs to mind is an image of the designer looking somewhat adorable at the end of her runway. Then perfume. Then nothing. This season for the first time I actually looked at a Vera Wang collection and I’m feeling rather saddened that I haven’t looked at one before. Humorous at times, simply stylish at others – the Vera Wang girl is a star and this NYFW she shines above her counterparts, high in the sky. (No need to worry – she’s not nearly as pretentious as I am).

So there we have it – five of the best collections of NYFW, AW 2014. Sam Prance
