East Side Chic – #streetstyle

In #streetstyle, ART & FASHION, Features, HOME by Hannah Beer

#streetstyle is a feature in which your friend and ours, Hannah Beer, skips around London stopping, photographing and questioning those she deems stylish. If you have noticed an Audrey Hepburn look-alike admiring your fashion it was probably Ms. Beer. It is also worth noting that the concept of street style is unique to Prancing Through LIFE. And so to East London, the pilgrimage site for the young and stylish from across the globe (or the UK at least). This weekend I went to Columbia Road Flower Market, where, as well as picking up some beautiful roses, I also snapped two of my favourite looks so far. England has clearly decided that that’s it for summer now, as the weekend proved to be one of the rainiest there’s been in London for ages (the only upside I could find for not being at Glastonbury). The flashes of neon in both of these outfits, then, certainly brightened up my day.

Ridwan, 24

DSC_0136When I stopped and asked Ridwan for his photo, he laughed, which confused me. He then told me that he’d literally only just woken up, which confused me even more. How can someone who’s just woken up look this stylish?  It takes me a good forty five minutes to generate enough brain power to even think about getting dressed. As always when a coat’s involved, I really love this one – the cut, the texture, the fact that it could easily be worn in summer or winter. But, more unusually, I loved Ridwan’s shoes more. It’s not everyone that can pull off neon Birkenstock style sandals – in fact, I’d say he’s in about 8% of the population that can. Which makes me really quite jealous.

What does style mean to you?

A lot – defining who you are.

Emmanuelle Alt (the actual editor of French Vogue) has demonstrated time and time again on the streets of Paris and at Fashion Weeks the importance of a good white shirt and some ankle skimming trousers, and here’s Jade reinforcing that lesson on a rainy Sunday in East London. Furthermore, Jade’s showing that ‘cropped’ doesn’t have to mean midriff-bearing, and ‘jumper’ doesn’t have to mean winter, which is very good news all round for jumper lovers. As for her oversized clutch, well, you can never go wrong with an oversized clutch. It goes with every outfit and, what’s more, makes it look better. It’s the leather jacket of bags – and I don’t bestow this title lightly, given the prestige with which I hold my leather jacket.
